At the beginning of a project, my client’s sense of dread is almost palpable; s/he has usually been avoiding and resisting this project for some time, and there’s a strong feeling in the air of, “Where does one even begin?” (Usually we’re at the “worst first” place, of course!)
Once momentum picks up, the big picture begins to take shape, and order starts to replace chaos. Gradually the feelings shift.
One of the most fun and exciting parts of a project comes at the tipping point; it might be the 51% mark of success, but many times it’s earlier. My client will look around our work space and say something like, “It looks doable now!” That is a beautiful moment – when discouragement is replaced by hope.
